Installing the ubuntu-desktop package, I also found that the onscreen display not being displayed when changing brightness seems to be a KDE bug, at least the OSD is working in an ubuntu session. slightly off-topic: could someone please point me to a website explaining how to upgrade the BIOS within ubuntu.
