I believe I've found the reason that this bug still exists in gutsy: The driver is version 0.4.4 (an unstable version released 2005-08-21) while wpa-supplicant is version 0.6.0 (latest devel release). Wireless- extensions support was added to the hostap driver in version 0.4.5 (2005-09-25). Updating to the current stable release of the hostap driver will very likely fix this issue.
