Fionn has already posted a working patch here. It has been not been applied upstream because the developers are not certain is the best approach. From a users perspective-- it works for now and we always get a more technically correct patch later! However, Ubuntu could apply the patch to its release. It may help to discuss the issue directly with the network-manager authors. I believe if you visit this bug in LaunchPad, you'll find a link to the upstream bug in NetworkManager. I had offered to loan a developer an affected card so they could troubleshoot it more directly, but none of them took me up on the offer. Because the bug causes VPN and SSH connections to needlessly break, it can make the connection unusable.
