Whoops. When filling in the details of my SMTP account for debugging I noticed that I used smtp.google.com instead of smtp.gmail.com I guess I was drunk when setting it up. It works now, I used this for setup instructions http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=38343&query=thunderbird&topic=&type=f&ctx=search
