Whoops. When filling in the details of my SMTP account for debugging I noticed
that I used smtp.google.com instead of smtp.gmail.com
I guess I was drunk when setting it up.
It works now, I used this for setup instructions
http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=38343&query=thunderbird&topic=&type=f&ctx=search

my working smtp setup for anyone who might have trouble in future:
server: smtp.gmail.com
port: 587
user: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
connection: TLS

thanks...
