After even more testing I can say, it's definitely triggered by XFCE stuff. Now I'm using gnome desktop and everything runs fine. But: the segfaults happened in libc & libglib, so the problem is definitely inside one of those libs. Maybe the gnome stuff itself doesn't use the i386-parts? Then why a firefox start doesn't crash the gnome system, firefox itself hasn't changed and I bet it uses the same routines and libs like under XFCE.
