It's weird. I don't seem to be able to go back to the problematic state
(it used to not work again when I did "lpadmin -p printer -R pdftops-
renderer-default").

On 13.04, it was not working when I installed (from scratch but without
reformatting /home). I think (but the paper is gone to trash) that the
message was the same as the one on top of this thread.

I did "lpadmin -p <printer> -o pdftops-renderer-default=pdftops" and it
worked. But I don't know how to come back to the previous state. So the
previous attached file is probably a working one...
