I can confirm this bug is still open and is a major issue. Dapper 686 smp, with all latest updates, freezes a few seconds after logon when using a Radeon 7000.
My spec: 2 * PIII 733 mhz processors (Coppermine) Intel OR840 Workstation m/b 768 ram Asus ATI Radeon 7000 Ubuntu: Dapper 6.06 01 686 smp kernel (fully updated) - The 386 kernel works.
