same problem here with the ati driver from the ubuntu repo on a 64bit system-
starting with "LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/mesa/libGL.so.1 skype" works for me. fglrxinfo display: :1 screen: 0 OpenGL vendor string: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
