I have the same issue. One package that took about 50 minutes to extract was the webmin .deb file, using the Ubuntu Archive Manager it extracted within 4 seconds. I'm using 12.10 on a 32GB SSD from A-DATA with ext-4. Going by previous reports that might have something to do with SSDs? Using the unsafe io option speed up the unpacking of the webmin package. Took only about 20 seconds after that.
