@hillofbeans and @IanG: I don't know if the problem that led me to this launchpad issue is exactly the same; there seem to be a whole slew of problems related to Intel graphics. But my problem is described in comment 1, and my solution in comment 8 of this thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2136772 The problem seems not to have been in the kernel, per se, but in the kernel's incompatibility with the "-lts-quantal" packages in Precise.
