I think it's a bug in compiz that when it can't load some plugins for whatever reason (-310 being temporarily broken in this case - presumably you fell back to nouveau and then this didn't work for some reason, which is possibly a separate bug that should be filed if someone can verify that is the case) then it doesn't ever again try to do it until you make it forget. I'll move this bug to compiz. Glad the workaround worked for you.
