Since a few days I have been getting the same problem on a Mint 14 Nadia
64 bit with Cinnamon 1.6.7 (I have all recent updates installed).

>From my observations, it always happens after I start Google Chrome with
quite a few tabs. Then Cinnamon freezes, but luckily I am able to switch
to a text console (CTRL+ALT+F1), log in and clearly see that cinnamon
process is taking about 100% CPU. Killing it helps instantly, I am able
to go back to the GUI (CTRL+ALT+F7).
