Would there be other patches that would also be required, or should be included 
to be backported to 3.8?

I've tested the mainline kernel back on 3/26, and it didn't resolve my
issues for me. But that particular mainline build didn't include the
above fix which I had to pull from the drm-intel git tree.

I'll try the drm intel nightly as well.
