I'm not sure if this is related but here goes:

I just installed Feisty, both sun-java-1.5 and sun-java-6, eclipse, and
tomcat 5.5 from the official Ubuntu repositories. (in fact, this is my
first time install of Ubuntu and it went swimmingly well except for
tomcat 5.5)

anyway - I found a bunch of bugs reported on debian regarding tomcat -
apparently it creates a named pipe for
/var/lib/tomcat5.5/logs/catalina.out and then opens it in the background in the
/etc/inti.d/tomcat5.5 config file (about line 150 or so)

Apparently, this creates a hang (because the pipe cant' be written to or
something like that - i.e. there's no side 2 to the pipe)
which makes it so that tomcat5.5 doesn't actually fully instantiate -

is it possible that because tomcat5.5 really isn't there that eclipse can't
find it because it's looking for a socket to talk to rather than
the actual path/dir/filename

now you know why my nick is what it is (I really have no clue what all
the above is REALLY about but it sounded good)
