I clicked on the "Enable Desktop Effects" button, on the "Desktop Effects" tab under Preferences: Appearance, after the system had finished booting.
The indication from the button (pressed/not pressed) is working for me (now showing pressed). After the crash popped up I enabled the "Enable extra effects" option on the same tab, and everything seems to be working fine". I'm running tribe 3 i386 LiveCD. CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3200+, 512MB RAM.
