@Michael Fox: I'm thinking that an unofficial PPA similar to the
makson96 PPA that ATI/AMD owners use to run the Catalyst binary driver
may be the best solution here. Though running a downgraded X server
isn't ideal, neither is a binary driver (but we have to make do with
what we have to work with...).
