This should soon be backported to the earlier stable kernels, and then
make it's way into Ubuntu.

While you are waiting you can add invert_brightness to your GRUB boot
options as described at
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2/Troubleshooting#Editing_the_GRUB_2_Menu_During_Boot
