Installing xfonts-100dpi (and rebooting) solves the problem, but how
does a beginner know this *before* the crash happens?

We must be able to offer something better than

1 - A number of people are seeing the game crash
2 - some of these begin searching for a solution
3 - some of (2) find a possible solution
4 - some of (3) find the right solution
5 - some of (4) try to apply the right solution (install and reboot)
6 - some of (5) apply the right solution correctly.

Everyone in group (1) but not (6) is having a bad experience - and maybe
some of the (6)-people are slightly annoyed that all this is necessary
in order to simply open the help menu.
