Same problem on Ubuntu fresh install on 18/02/2013 (12.04 amd64) uname: Linux 3.5.0-24-generic #37~precise1-Ubuntu SMP Thu Feb 7 22:09:59 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Fresh install on /dev/sda1 ext4 (formatted). Added a few packages, including additionnal proprietary drivers (amd video), and dkms support added. installed virtualbox & virtualbox-dkms BEFORE THE MANDATORY REBOOT after dkms support was added by other packages (is this a clue ?) installation crashed, could not start virtualbox. Tried without success (after several reboots and install of other packages) full uninstall. install. PROBLEM SOLVED BY : full uninstall, download virtualbox 4.2.6 from www.virtualbox.org. install.
