I'd have to uninstall the proprietary nvidia driver first and check whether 
that solves the problem.
Unfortunately, last time I did that, after several rounds of installing, 
uninstalling, reinstalling and reconfiguring, the whole video driver subsystem 
was in such a mess that it was impossible to get any 3D graphics to run again; 
I had to reinstall the system. I'm a bit fearful to try that route again, 
because this machine is my day-to-day workhorse and a borked video 
configuration would ground me.

If there's a way to guarantee that the video configuration can be
restored, I'm willing to give it some more tries.
