I'm not in front of my computer right now, but I can tell you that if I *boot* (not change, as you mentioned) in vesa ("safe graphics mode"), then I don't have problems. Also, if I go to a console and put a resolution bigger than 1280x1024, then, I think that due to the lack of VRAM, compiz is disabled and I get a normal desktop, without the effects. I would like to use the 3D effects, and I bought a Matrox G400 exactly because it is/was one of best supported cards on Linux, with specifications for the (at the time) XFree86 developers (so that I wasn't tied to Linux only). I don't know if my guess regarding the resolution is correct, but it surely seems to be the case. I will get to my computer as soon as I can and I will try to see if */detect_outputs is enabled or not.
