see Question #211834, same symptom in quantal. in installing quantal, i installed ubuntu core, then did apt-get --no-install-recommends install lubuntu-desktop. after reinstalling again without --no-install- recommends, the problem was no longer present. this bug was filed earlier, i had installed maya from iso, and then did apt-get --no- install-recommends dist-upgrade. so perhaps this bug would also no longer present if --no-install-recommends is omitted.
