News: my guess is that it is still the randomness of the bug working around, or there has been a substantial improvements in recent kernels/Xorg drivers, but the bug is still present however in the past month EVERY time it occurred I could log in, suspend the computer (not hibernate), wake it up, and after usually one or two trials it went up again (in November/December it was not working even after 10 or 15 rounds). So now, as far as my Dell E4310 laptop is concerned, it is less critical. I must make clear that I use NONE of the other tricks (I tried them all in the past months, and none was solving the issue in a stable way, now they are all removed and I'm running the standard 12.04 (amd64) up to date distribution).
