This is still an issue in 12.10, kernel 3.5.0-21-generic. I can reproduce it by simply closing the lid on my Thinkpad T530. I have mine set to only turn off the screen when the lid is closed and not suspend. I can confirm that Adolfo's workaround of dropping to a terminal fixes the issue.
