I updated the kernel to 3.2.0-35 and have not been able to reproduce the problem since then. It may be that the new kernel fixed it or the same race condition that happened before is not triggered (since it only happened roughly 25% of the times, it sounds like it has to be some kind of race condition). Will add more info if it happens again.
