it's normal you need sudo to delete the configuration file in /etc. if the following is literal: "cannot write to etc./minicom/minird.xxx", there is an odd problem with the path ("etc./"). if it's not literal, you probably need to start minicom with sudo to make sure it can write a file in /etc .
i still think this is crucial: "All I can say is that Minicom flashes "Initializing modem" at first, and that the Minicom cursor usually disappears when I'm typing the commands."; you should be able to locally echo what you type in the minicom console. you don't know what minicom is using for initialisation (hence the need to try running it without any configuration file; initialisation with the wrong string would mess things up). since it doesn't work in wvdial or cutecom either, i agree the problem is probably related to the serial port. if you have a cd/dvd in this box, you could try the following: reset your modem to defaults in windows; then boot the live dvd/cd installer of ubuntu, don't reinstall but simply use the desktop environment, install minicom in that environment (sudo apt-get install minicom; this will work in the live environment) and try if that works. this would rule out any misconfiguration by your hand. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1087519 Title: Serial port ttyS4 doesn't work in 12.04 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1087519/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
