For the last few months I have been unable to use most wireless networks
with my machine. My machine is an HP Elitebook 8540w which as a
Ultimate-N 6300 wifi card. I cannot pinpoint exactly when the issue
started as most of the networks which I normally use (at home and work)
seem to work fine most of the time, but as I use other networks I
realize that they are the exception rather than the rule.
My home network has a TPlink tl-wr1043nd router, which has worked quite
well since I got the router. A few weeks ago though I got the "iwlwifi
0000:03:00.0: Queue 11 stuck for 2000 ms." message in dmesg after a few
seconds of passing data and would be unable to pass any more data until
I unloaded and reloaded the iwlwifi module. After fooling around with
my machine for a while I rebooted my router and things returned to
normal. All other users on my network were using it just fine, but it
was non-op with my machine.
This past week I was traveling so I was connecting to various airport, hotel
and cafe networks. In general most of them did not work. Reloading the module
would allow them to start working again but generally the failure would occur
anywhere from a few seconds to ten minutes later and stop packets from flowing.
Each time I would get a dmesg like this right as the link stopped passing
traffic:

I will list some of the things I tried and their results:
I disabled network-manager and connected to the networks using
wpa_supplicant from the command line. This did not improve usability
although I was able to monitor the connection status more closely so I
did most of my testing this way.
I tried to use wd_disable=1 module parameter. This did not improve the
usability but it did make reloading the module inoperative at bringing
the card back. I would have to reboot the machine to bring it back up.
I updated to the 3.2.0-29-generic kernel (from -27) but saw no change.
I tried installing linux-backports-modules-cw-29, no improvement.
Actually after more sustained use it seemed worse with compat-wireless
installed, and I experienced a hard system crash at one point.
