Confirmed locally that the patch fixes the white-screen-of-death problem
on 12.10/quantal.

Is the upstream approval absolutely required here?   The objection
("seems a bit simple...") is rather vague, and Alberts above has
essentially shown that it is in fact one per screen anyway, making the
objection even more dubious.

Given that it impacts many users, and has been confimed as a workable
fix many times independently, I don't see why it isn't simply added to
the build and integrated locally, independent of the aged criticism from
two years ago that blocked the patch.  That would seem to be the
pragmatic approach here.
