Ok here, it just works: I had to unlock xorg's previous version from /etc/apt/preferences (replaced the sticking lines with those advised here https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed to prevent all -proposed auto updates) and upgrade it to current Precise default release and update all in Synaptic BEFORE I add precise-proposed to the repos, then in Synaptic force the listed nvidia-96 96.43.20 to 96.43.23 and update. Hibernation still brings to black screen on thaw after the 100% pages are shown reloaded
