Thanks for your bug report.
xfce4-volstatus-icon has just been accepted into gutsy, you might want give a 
look at it.
When you plug a removable drive, xfce4-volstatus-icon displays in the systray 
an icon allowing you to easily and safely remove it. You can also autostart it 
on each session, so that you don't need to launch it before plugging a 
removable drive.

In Xubuntu it is hard to tell when it is safe to remove a usb device as the 
icon doesn't change
