Hi Bill, OK - that sounds like you had a fairly painful upgrade, and I think your problem is down to some weird mixture of things from different versions; I've only looked at your set of libpopplerglib* libraries:
ii libpoppler-glib2 0.6.4-1ubuntu3.4 amd64 PDF rendering library (GLib-based shared library) rc libpoppler-glib4 0.12.4-0ubuntu5.2 amd64 PDF rendering library (GLib-based shared library) ii libpoppler-glib8:amd64 0.20.4-0ubuntu1 amd64 PDF rendering library (GLib-based shared library) According to packages.ubuntu.com when I searched for lobpoppler in all versions I see: http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords=+libpoppler&searchon=names&suite=all§ion=all and that says that libpoppler-glib2 isn't in 12.04, it was only in 8.04 libpoppler-glib4 isn't there - that was in 10.04 libpoppler-glib8 you have as version 0.20.4-0ubuntu1 which matches the version in 12.10 so I think that means you're actually running 12.10 now, with a few bits left over - which kind of matches your explanation I think that should be OK if everything is consistent. Some more questions: 1) How did you install gnome 3 ? Did you add a ppa or external package repo of sometype? If so I suspect it's got an incompatible version of a package of some type. 2) Does: sudo apt-get dist-upgrade return cleanly without any errors - or are there some upgrade issues still outstanding? I'd try seeing if you can (gently) remove any old packages; 3) What happens if you try and remove libpoppler-glib2 either from software manager or a sudo apt-get remove libpoppler-glib2 ( be careful it might want to remove a load of other stuff, only say yes if you don't need them).
