Solution on my HP Pavilion dv7-6151sd:

1. Resetted BIOS because one of my OS's crapped up some settings which HP
doesn't allow you to adjust yourself in BIOS setup. I suspect that the AHCI
/ACPI / ATA /IDE settings were the problem. I don't know if this is important
for you, but just to be sure i'm including this step (check HP website on how
to do it. In my case: Hold windows-key+B and then press the power button for 3
seconds. Then wait for quite a while.).
2. Install windows 7
3. Install HP support assistant. This will fix the battery problem.
4. Install Linux OS. Battery will now be present and working.

Overall the problem that an OS (including windows 7) cannot find some
devices and the solution is to install HP specific drivers and software.
In the Battery case this seems to be the only solution.
