I believe this should me marked as solved. The issue was caused by a flaky DVD drive. I noticed it was sometimes not showing in BIOS. Also, the machine being dual-boot, I was in Windows 7, looked at Device Manager and noticed an 'X' next to the aforementioned DVD drive. Disconnecting the drive from the motherboard resolved the issue.
