I have the same (or very similar) issue with my system. For me the high CPU usage is related especially to resuming from suspend. After resuming the system is very unresponsive for around 1-2 minutes, with gnome-shell taking 80-100% cpu. After that the cpu usage slowly decreases, but stays around 20% when idle.
