Okay, so for those of you who are still suffering from this bug on 12.04 with all updates installed, there is now another option: 1) Enable proposed as instructed in comment #138 2) Install the latest HDA driver according to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/UpgradingAlsa/DKMS
Reboot and test. I would be happy if at least one person - for which this is not yet fixed - could report back and say that the above is working. This is necessary so the PulseAudio fix can be released through the normal update channels. And if you're testing it and it's not working, please file an alsa-info so we can verify that it's really this bug you're having and nothing else.
