Public bug reported: This bug is similar to Bug #810606 (Slow cifs in 11.04). I'm reporting it because that one is marked EXPIRED while the issue is still not fixed.
Transferring files to and from cifs shares, mounted via fstab entries, is a considerably slow process in nautilus. Transferring to same shares via rsync or ssh is 2-3x faster. Over my wireless network, I get speeds of ~5MB/s with rsync and ssh. In nautilus, speed drops to 2.5MB/s max. I've set the CIFSMaxShare to 130048 and rsize option in the fstab entry but it doesn't seem to make any difference.
