The problem I was describing was not merely the usage of XSync, but the way in which we use the synchronous parts of the X11 protocol. Especially with moving windows you have a call to sendConfigureNotify (required for ICCCM compliance). To avoid any race conditions with the server regarding override redirect windows, we basically take a server grab and query the server for all state relevant to us. We might be able to be a little more lax than that - I'm pretty sure that applications don't need the window stacking information.
