This problem has appeared previously on this machine. I have been usable to install the bootloader despite repeated tries.
It is a new Gigabyte FM-2 socket MB with a UEFI equipped bios. Although the UEFI is set for recognizing a 'legacy' boot loader I have been unable to install grub trying to install neither Ubuntu 12.04, 12.10 nor Mint13.
