The attached screen shot shows two views of the same window. The one in
the foreground shows the problems.

How to duplicate the problem.

1. Click on XTERM on the menu bar to open a new xterm window
2. Hold down the Enter key for 20 lines or so. That's what you see: the prompt 
disappears and the vertical white 'line' appears
3. Click out of the window to another window and the window is redrawn 
correctly (i.e., the prompts re-appear).

The problem (i.e., display corruption) occurs at various other times as
well and comes close to rendering the program unusable.

Note: to capture the screen shot of the problem I used the "Take
Screenshot" program and set the "Grab after a delay" setting to 10
seconds, clicked in the window, then held the Enter key down for a few
seconds.
