Actually, the machine was not configured to have a virtually floppy drive - (see attached screenshot 'No Virtual Drive'). The VM was configured to have a CD and USB - but, as we see in the lower right corner - neither of them was connected. Im thinking of removing open-vm-tools and using actual vmware VM- tools to see what happens.
