I originally posted a duplicate bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/826386 regarding this issue. I recently downloaded Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzel. I made a startup disk using a USB flash drive to perform a fresh install and brightness was working "out of the box" no extra parameters were needed, no extra steps were taken. Brightness worked immediately, as well as the brightness controls. I have been running this installation for a week, updating software on a bi-daily basis and have had zero problems. I think this may be fixed. I am using an Acer Aspire 5734z.
