Two weeks away does wonders for perspective. Tested the previous known
working release - failed, so looked further and found I was
misconfiguring grub (setting GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="" after the correct
"i8042.nomux", thus negating the required setting). Tried again with
precise, taking this into account and tests OK.
My deepest apologies for the wasted time.
