I just received the same error message "Conversion failed. It seems a bug of Mencoder" repeatedly while editing a disk image from windows media files (.wmv) . The source files were on USB hard drive (WesternDigital: 2TB). I then tried the instructed "use ffmeg instead of mencodedrer" work around, but got the same result. Suspecting the slowness of the USB connected NTFS-formatted HD, I copied the source files to a folder on the internal hard drive. Now the disk image was created without any error messages.
