So, just to clarify, when you did not install the linux-image-extra
package, brightness control worked? However, when you installed it, it
stopped working?

linux-image-extra-3.7.0-030700rc4-generic_3.7.0-030700rc4.201211041435_amd64.deb

or did you omit linux-image-extra?
