Public bug reported:

Ubuntu system, starting from LUbuntu desktop. Packages could not be
upgraded. Samba could not be updated. Finally, updater told me upgrade
had failed and system was in unstable state. It told me to file a bug
report and include file /var/log/dist-update. That file doesn't exist,
but /var/log/dist-upgrade/* exists. Will attach main.log and crash
report if Launchpad will let me.

Update software requested a password to complete report files.
Validation failed because it was asking for a _root_ password, and root
is not enabled on Ubuntu systems.

What a mess.
