3.7.0-030700rc3-generic seems to have fixed this problem. I can also report on better performance of radeon driver: no artifacts with both compiz special effects and emacs23 under compiz. This is the Mate DE, I am testing now. All seems to be very nice on this laptop now.
Let me know if there is any other testing I could do, say, check any earlier versions like 3.6. (I am pretty sure it was present on 3.4.)
