Getting this crash as well. It happens on Ubuntu 12.04 running Scratch 1.4. Here's the action: record a new sound, then play the sound. When finished playing the sound that was just recorded, hit "record" button. When "record" button is pressed Scratch crashes and disappears.
Can provide other output, but here's the terminal output during crash: meowman@meowman-Inspiron-537s:~$ scratch Executing: padsp /usr/lib/squeak/4.4.7-2357/squeakvm -encoding UTF-8 -vm-display-x11 -xshm -plugins /usr/lib/scratch/plugins/:/usr/lib/squeak/4.4.7-2357/ -vm-sound-oss /usr/share/scratch/Scratch.image squeakvm: /build/buildd/squeak-vm-4.4.7.2357/unix/vm-sound-OSS/sqUnixSoundOSS.c:355: dspOpen: Assertion `dsp->fd < 0' failed.
