It would be nice if the systray would re-hide the icons after a certain
timeout.

I have a systray with various icons hidden and showing.
There is a triangle that makes the hidden icons appear again.

After half a minute or so I would typically not need those icons
anymore. Provided my mouse has not been inside the systray all that
time.

This is a feature that was available in kde3

This is also done in Windows (XP at least). I'd suggest much less than a
minute. In Windows this is done with a nice little animation but that is
just eye candy.

I know that KDE4 is neither KDE3 nor Windows but it would still be nice
to have this.

(Also, in Windows, you can set icons to "Always show", "Hide when
inactive for some time" (they get shown again if something changes) or
"Always hide".)

Would be a nice feature, another thing I would like about the systray is
the option to set the amount of icons to show when in hidden mode, maybe
giving preference to the icons that were clicked last.
