well dpkg gives me /etc/smokeping/smokemail as well as reply - while i still 
earn the same error if i as example try to reinstall smokeping via

>> apt-get installl --reinstall smokeping

error:

>> setting up smokeping (2.6.7-1) ...
>> * Starting latency logger daemon smokeping                                   
>>   
>> ERROR: /etc/smokeping/config, line 42: File '/etc/smokeping/smokemail' does 
>> not exist

As a sidenote
While dpkg lists smokemail in /etc/smokeping/smokemail `ls`doesn’t shows that 
file at all on my ubuntu box.
