I've been diligently trying to get the system to boot with the mainline
kernels as I notice  updates in the repository, but the result is the
same, the kernel hangs on boot.

I did some more digging, and it looks like it's hanging around the point
that ata stuff initializes. (I've attached a screenshot showing where it
locks up.)

It also appears that the kernel is still responding, as the screen shows
the keyboard being unplugged and plugged back in, and it looks like the
monitor went to sleep after some time.
